This module is inspired by two popular tales by H.C. Andersen: The Little Mermaid and The Lighter. Attractive images encourage role-playing and imagination, both in free and guided play. From The Little Mermaid, we can associate the various elements with the tale, starting from the bottom left-hand corner, where the bottom of the sea is depicted, to the top right-hand corner where the mermaid, hidden behind a rock, gazes longingly at her beloved prince’s ship. On the other side, the tale of The Lighter is represented by the various elements of the module, starting in the bottom left-hand corner, where the soldier meets the witch and descends into the dogs’ den, and ending on the right-hand side with a physical, but also social, climb. The roots, padlock, trunk and prison window on the lower level all relate directly to the world of fairy tales. The trunk contains parts under the lid, and a shelter is concealed behind the flexible roots. The materials and playful elements in this module are highly varied and can be manipulated to stimulate the imagination and bring H.C. Andersen’s fabulous stories to life. These elements encourage naming, explanation, comparison, argumentation and sequencing of messages. The module’s extension, linked by a climbing net, adds further fun elements to this extraordinary world, allowing even more children to join in and get moving!
